Introduction to Decorative Nettles
When plant lovers talk about decorative 'Nettles' as houseplants, they're typically referring to the charming Pilea and Soleirolia species — delicate, low-growing plants with tiny, jewel-like leaves that form lush, moss-like mounds. Baby's Tears (Soleirolia soleirolii) is the most beloved of these, producing a dense carpet of tiny, round leaves on thread-like stems that spill beautifully over the edges of pots and terrariums. Silver Sparkle (Pilea glauca) is another popular variety, with its tiny silver-dusted leaves creating a shimmering, ethereal effect. These plants are perfect for terrariums, dish gardens, and as ground cover beneath larger plants.
Light Requirements
Decorative Nettles thrive in medium to bright indirect light. They naturally grow in dappled shade and should never be exposed to direct sunlight, which scorches their delicate leaves. A north- or east-facing window is ideal. They are among the better houseplants for lower light conditions.
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist — these plants do not tolerate drying out. Water when the surface of the soil just begins to feel dry. Baby's Tears in particular wilts dramatically when underwatered but recovers quickly with a thorough watering. Use filtered or room-temperature water and ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot.
Humidity & Temperature
Decorative Nettles love high humidity (60%+) and are excellent terrarium plants for this reason. Keep temperatures between 55–75°F (13–24°C) — they actually prefer slightly cooler conditions than most tropical houseplants. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 45°F.
Soil & Potting
Use a well-draining, moisture-retaining potting mix — a blend of peat moss and perlite works well. These plants have shallow, delicate root systems and do best in shallow pots or dish gardens. They are excellent terrarium plants due to their love of high humidity and compact size.
Fertilizing
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to quarter strength. These are light feeders and don't need heavy fertilization. Avoid over-fertilizing, which causes leggy growth and leaf burn.
Terrarium Use
Baby's Tears and Silver Sparkle are among the best plants for terrariums. Their love of high humidity, compact size, and lush, carpet-forming growth make them perfect as ground cover in closed or open terrariums. They pair beautifully with ferns, mosses, and other humidity-loving plants.
